Overview

Most shoppers leave without buying or leaving an email — and once they are gone, you have no way to reach them. An exit-intent popup appears at the exact moment a shopper signals they are about to leave your store. Instead of letting that visitor bounce, you show a focused offer — a discount, free shipping, or an email signup — giving them one last reason to convert. Nudgesmart detects exit behavior client-side, so the popup fires instantly with no flicker and no slowdown to your page.

How it works

How exit-intent popups work

  1. Nudgesmart watches for exit signals — cursor moving toward the browser close button on desktop, and rapid upward scrolls or back-navigation gestures on mobile.
  2. When the signal fires, a popup you designed in the visual editor appears over your store. No code, no theme edits.
  3. The shopper sees a single, clear offer — a coupon, free-shipping threshold, or newsletter signup — with one obvious call to action.
  4. Captured emails sync to your marketing tool, and you can cap how often a visitor sees the popup so it never feels spammy.
Why it works

Why merchants use exit-intent popups

  • Recover visitors who would otherwise leave with an empty cart
  • Trigger only on real exit behavior, not on a fixed timer that interrupts shoppers
  • Works on desktop and mobile with separate, tuned detection
  • Frequency caps and "once per session" rules keep the experience polite
  • Runs entirely client-side, so it never slows your store down

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How does exit-intent detection work on mobile?

Mobile browsers do not have a mouse cursor, so Nudgesmart watches for behavioral exit signals instead — fast upward scrolling, back-button or swipe-back gestures, and tab inactivity. You can enable or disable mobile triggering per campaign.

Will an exit-intent popup hurt my page speed or SEO?

No. Nudgesmart loads its scripts only when you have an active campaign, and exit detection runs in the browser after the page is interactive. There are no render-blocking resources, so your Core Web Vitals are unaffected.

Can I stop the same visitor from seeing the popup over and over?

Yes. Each campaign has frequency controls — show once per session, once per day, or once per week — plus a global rate limit so a returning shopper is never bombarded.

Do I need to edit my theme or write code?

No. You build the popup in the visual editor and turn the campaign on. Nudgesmart injects it through the Shopify theme app extension, so nothing touches your theme files.
