A chat button is a promise to reply
In many markets shoppers would rather send a quick message than fill in a contact form or wait for an email. A WhatsApp button lets them ask a question from the app already on their phone. The button is the easy part. The part that decides whether it helps is what happens after someone taps it.
This guide covers the setup details and the habits around them. To plan your button, the WhatsApp button tool for Shopify checks your number format, drafts the opening message and previews the button as a real store widget.
Get the number format right
WhatsApp's own click-to-chat documentation asks for the full number in international format: the country code followed by the number, with no plus sign, no leading zero, and no spaces, brackets or dashes. So a UK mobile written locally as 07700 900123 becomes 447700900123. A number typed the way you would dial it locally is the most common reason a chat button opens an error instead of a conversation.
Use a number that belongs to the business, not a personal phone. The WhatsApp Business app is free to download and keeps the store's chats apart from your own.
Pre-fill the first message
Click-to-chat links can open with text already typed in the box. A short opening line such as "Hi, I have a question about" saves the shopper a step and tells you the chat came from the store. Including the page the shopper was on is even more useful, because you can see which product they are asking about without a round of back and forth.
Keep it short and neutral. The shopper can edit it before sending, and a long pre-written message reads as if you are putting words in their mouth.
Set expectations for replies
- State your hours. If chats are answered during the working day, say so near the button or in an automatic greeting.
- Use the away message. The WhatsApp Business app can send a greeting to first-time contacts and an away message outside your hours. Both are worth setting up before the button goes live.
- Do not promise instant answers. A slow reply after a promise of "instant support" is worse than an honest "we usually reply the same day".
- Save common answers. Delivery times, returns and sizing come up repeatedly. Quick replies keep the answers consistent with your published policies.
Where the button sits
A floating button in a bottom corner is the usual pattern, shown on every page so shoppers can ask wherever the question comes up. Check it on a phone before anything else. Bottom corners are crowded: cookie banners, other chat tools, a sticky add-to-cart bar and back-to-top buttons all compete for the same spot. A chat button that covers the add-to-cart button costs more than it gains.
Choose between a round icon and a button with a short label. The icon is quieter; the label makes it obvious what tapping does. Either way, give the button an accessible name such as "Chat on WhatsApp" so screen reader users know what it is, and keep it large enough to tap comfortably.
Privacy and marketing permission
When a shopper messages you, you receive their phone number and whatever they write. Say in your privacy policy that you use WhatsApp for customer messages; the privacy policy generator can help with the wording.
A support chat is not permission to send promotions. WhatsApp's business messaging policy expects people to have opted in before a business messages them, and email and SMS marketing rules in many countries work the same way. Answer the question they asked, and ask separately if you want to send offers.
Next step
Write your number in international format, decide your reply hours, and set up a greeting and an away message. Then open the WhatsApp button tool to check the number, draft the opening message and preview the WhatsApp button from the Nudgesmart app. You switch it on from the app, and it shows across the store. The other store widgets are in the store widget gallery.
A chat button catches questions the page did not answer. For the blocks that answer them on the page first, see which product page widgets earn their place.
