Chat button for Shopify: Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram and more

Start from a use case

Each one ticks a set of channels and fills them with sample details. Swap in your own in step 2 and the checks update as you type.

What the channel check reviews

A chat button for Shopify is a single floating launcher, pinned to a corner of each storefront page, that links visitors to the messaging apps a business already uses, such as WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram or email, and this tool validates every number, username and address in the set before the merchant turns the launcher on in Nudgesmart.

The field rules follow the ones the Nudgesmart app applies when you fill in each channel, and the number check follows the international numbering plan (ITU-T E.164) that caps a full number at 15 digits. Only need WhatsApp? The WhatsApp button tool reviews that single number, its opening message and your reply hours. Every widget layout the app offers is on the store widgets page, and the steps to switch the button on are in the chat button help article.

A launcher is only as useful as the details behind each tile in it. Here is what gets reviewed, using the names the Nudgesmart app gives them.

Channel
A messaging route the launcher can hand someone to: WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Telegram, calling, texting, email, LINE or Viber. Tick the routes somebody monitors and enter a detail for each.
Digits, country prefix leading
WhatsApp, calling, texting and Viber each expect a number written as 8 to 15 digits with the international prefix at the start. Strip the plus, gaps and brackets, and drop the trunk 0 a domestic caller dials, since no international prefix begins with 0.
Username
Messenger, Instagram and Telegram want the handle itself rather than a URL. Paste a profile address and it gets trimmed to the handle; paste a post, reel or story address and it gets rejected, since that points at content instead of an account.
LINE ID
The identifier people search to reach a LINE account. Official business accounts begin with @, while personal IDs lack it and rarely suit a brand.
Mobile-only route
Calling, texting and Viber links appear on mobiles alone. Choose only those and desktop visitors get no launcher whatsoever.
Direct link or menu
A lone channel launches immediately on tap. Two or more make a tap reveal a compact menu, where visitors choose whichever app suits them.
Brand tiles
Inside that menu every app keeps its official palette and logo, which makes familiar ones easy to spot. Styles and colour sets restyle the launcher itself, never those tiles.

Nudgesmart switches widgets like this one on across your store as an app embed, with each chat app in its official colours, and is available on the Shopify App Store. See every widget layout or see what it costs.

Five channel sets, cleaned up

Made-up details: the phone numbers sit in blocks reserved for drama and demos, the handles belong to an imaginary linen brand, and every address uses example.com. Each cleaned value and warning is produced by the identical routine the widget above uses.

Worked examples: what was typed for each channel, what the app gets, and what the tool flags
ScenarioTypedFor the appWhat the tool says
UK number written with its (0), plus an Instagram handle
  • WhatsApp: +44 (0)20 7946 0958
  • Instagram: @harbour.linen
  • 442079460958
  • harbour.linen
The 0 you dial at home was dropped, because it is never dialled after the country code. Spaces, brackets, dashes and the plus sign were taken out. The app takes digits only. The @ was dropped. The app takes the name on its own. Instagram chats start inside the Instagram app, so a shopper on a computer usually lands on your profile instead of a chat.
Local mobile typed the way it is said aloud
  • WhatsApp: 07700 900123
  • not ready
WhatsApp: It starts with 0, and no country code does, so the country code is missing. Put the country code first and drop the 0 you dial at home: a UK number 020 7946 0958 becomes 442079460958. Spaces, brackets, dashes and the plus sign were taken out. The app takes digits only.
A post link pasted instead of the profile
  • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/C0ffee123/
  • Email: mailto:hello@example.com
  • not ready
  • hello@example.com
Instagram: That link points at a post, a story or a group, not the account. Paste the profile link or just the username. The mail link was cut down to the address, which is the part the app keeps. Instagram chats start inside the Instagram app, so a shopper on a computer usually lands on your profile instead of a chat.
Call, text and Viber only, on one number
  • Phone call: +61 491 570 006
  • Text message: +61 491 570 006
  • Viber: 0061 491 570 006
  • 61491570006
  • 61491570006
  • 61491570006
Spaces, brackets, dashes and the plus sign were taken out. The app takes digits only. Spaces, brackets, dashes and the plus sign were taken out. The app takes digits only. The 00 in front is the international dialling prefix, so it was dropped and the country code kept. Spaces, brackets, dashes and the plus sign were taken out. The app takes digits only. Phone call, text message and Viber show on phones only, and that is every channel picked, so visitors on a computer will not see the button at all. Add email, Instagram or another app that opens on a computer. Phone call, text message and Viber use the same number. That is fine, as long as the phone it reaches is watched for all of them.
Five channels, one of them too short
  • WhatsApp: +1 415 555 0199
  • Messenger: facebook.com/harbourlinen
  • Telegram: @shop
  • Email: help@example.com
  • LINE: harbourlinen
  • 14155550199
  • harbourlinen
  • not ready
  • help@example.com
  • harbourlinen
Telegram: Telegram usernames are 5 to 32 letters, numbers or underscores, and start with a letter. Spaces, brackets, dashes and the plus sign were taken out. The app takes digits only. The link was cut down to the username, harbourlinen, which is the part the app keeps. A Facebook Page link works here because the Page username is the same name Messenger uses. The @ was dropped. The app takes the name on its own. No @ at the start, so this reads as a personal LINE ID. A LINE Official Account ID starts with @, and that is usually the one a store wants shoppers to reach. That is five channels. Every one is another app someone has to watch, and a long menu is slower to choose from, so most stores do better with about three they answer every day.
The second row is the commonest slip: a local number with no country code, which would reach nobody. The fourth checks out field by field, yet the button would never show on a computer, and the last one is ready apart from a short Telegram name but asks shoppers to choose from five apps.

Where a format check stops

Valid shape, wrong owner

A handle can pass every rule yet belong to a stranger, and a well-formed number can ring a spare handset left in a desk. Tap every tile on the published storefront to confirm each route lands with you.

It is not live chat

Messages never reach Shopify or Nudgesmart. Each tap launches the visitor’s chosen messaging app, and the whole conversation stays there, answered from wherever that app runs on your side.

Each route is a commitment

Adding an app adds somewhere a visitor sits waiting. Three routes monitored daily serve people better than six glanced at weekly, hence the advice to stay compact.

Desktops show a shorter menu

Calling, texting and Viber disappear on desktops, and Instagram there tends to load a profile page rather than a conversation. Review the menu from a laptop too, not just a mobile.

Mind the lower corners

Consent notices, sticky purchase bars and assorted widgets crowd the lower edge of a mobile display. Load a product listing on a handset and confirm the launcher hides nothing important.

Trademarks belong elsewhere

WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Telegram, LINE and Viber are marks owned by their respective companies. Nudgesmart operates independently, is not endorsed by or connected with them, and mentions them purely to identify where a tap leads.

Chat button FAQ

How do I add a chat button to my Shopify store?

Open Nudgesmart, make a Chat button, tick each channel your team monitors, enter its detail and publish. Next, in the Shopify theme editor, enable it among App embeds and save. Being an embed, it covers the whole storefront at once, with nothing to place template by template.

Is this live chat?

No. There is no inbox, and nothing gets stored. The launcher links visitors to messaging apps you already run, and every conversation continues inside that app, exactly as if they had looked you up there directly.

Which messaging apps can it link to?

Nine routes: WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Telegram, calling, texting, email, LINE and Viber, in any combination.

How does it behave with one channel versus several?

A lone channel launches immediately. Two or more turn the launcher into a compact menu listing your chosen apps, and visitors tap whichever they prefer.

Why is calling missing on desktop?

The button shows call, text and Viber links on phones only. Pick only those and desktop visitors get no launcher, so include email or a messaging app that opens on laptops as well.

How many channels are sensible?

Just those somebody monitors daily, which for most brands means roughly three. That figure is guidance rather than a cap: each extra route is another app needing attention, and compact menus are faster to scan.

What if WhatsApp is my only channel?

Then use the dedicated WhatsApp button tool instead. It reviews your number, the opening message visitors send and your reply hours, and previews that single-app button from Nudgesmart.

Will it suit my brand colours?

Menu tiles keep each messaging app’s official palette and logo, so visitors spot familiar ones instantly. The launcher itself follows whichever style and colour set you select, and the live preview here shows them on a demo storefront.
