What should my abandoned cart emails say, and when should they go out?

It decides which doubt the second email answers.
It is only ever placed in the third email.
Both optional. A friendly voice unless you choose another.
Used in the subject and sign-off. Never stored or sent.
Pick what you sell and whether to hold back an incentive, and three emails appear here, each with a send time, subject, preview text and body.

The three emails and what each one is for
An abandoned cart email sequence is the short run of reminders a store sends to a shopper who added items to the cart and left without paying, so a clothing boutique might send a plain reminder about an hour later, answers about sizing and fit the next day, and a 10 percent code two or three days after the cart was left.
Written from fixed templates, not by a language model; the send times are our own suggested spacing. To see what abandoned carts cost your store, try the cart abandonment calculator.
Every sequence here has the same spine: remind, reassure, then make a last ask. What changes is the voice, the doubt the middle email answers and whether an incentive is held back for the end.
- Email one: the reminder
- Goes out roughly an hour after the cart is left, while the shopper still remembers it. It shows what is in the cart and invites a reply. No discount, because many people simply got interrupted.
- Email two: the reassurance
- Sent about a day later. It answers the question that most often stalls a purchase in your category, such as fit for clothing or compatibility for electronics, and adds a real review and your returns promise.
- Email three: the last ask
- Two or three days after the cart was left. If you chose an incentive, this is where it appears, and only here. Without one, it is a polite final reminder that also asks why they stopped.
- Subject line and preview text
- The two lines a shopper sees before opening. Each email gets both, written so the preview adds something the subject did not say.
- Bracketed blocks
- Parts only you or your email platform can fill: the cart items, your code, a review, your returns wording. They are marked so nothing invented slips into a live email.
- Tone
- Friendly, direct, premium or playful. It changes the greeting, the sign-off, the subject and the preview, never the facts.

Five shops, five cart recovery sequences
Invented stores, not real brands. Each row is written by the same function that runs in the generator above, so the subjects and timing match exactly what it would give you.
| Store | Email 1 subject | Email 2 subject | Email 3 subject |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clothing boutique, 10 percent in the last email | You left something behind at Linen and Loom | Still deciding? Here is what people usually ask | 10% off to finish your order |
| Skincare brand, no incentive | Your selection is waiting | A few details about your products | A final note about your selection |
| Pet supplies, free shipping | Your cart is feeling a little lonely | Overthinking it? Totally fair | Fine, here is free shipping. Deal? |
| Furniture store, fixed amount off | Your Oak Row cart is saved | Quick answers before you check out | Complete your order: $25 off inside |
| Coffee roaster, discount with no figure yet | You left something behind in your cart | Still deciding? Here is what people usually ask | A discount to finish your order |
What the template cannot do for you
Only shoppers you can email get these
A cart email needs an address. Shoppers who typed one at checkout, or signed up earlier, can be reminded; everyone who browsed, filled a cart and left anonymously cannot. For many stores that second group is the larger one.
The platform does the sending
Shopify has its own abandoned checkout email, and most email platforms offer a cart or checkout flow. Paste these words into whichever one you use, and set its timing to match.
Buyers must leave the flow
Anyone who completes an order should stop receiving reminders straight away. Check that your platform exits a shopper on purchase before you switch the flow on.
Consent and local rules apply
Whether you may email a shopper who never ticked a marketing box depends on where you and they are. This page cannot judge that; your platform settings and local guidance can.
Urgency has to be true
Do not say an item is nearly sold out or a code is expiring unless it really is. Shoppers who learn your deadlines are soft ignore the next one.
Abandoned cart email template questions
What should an abandoned cart email say?
Remind the shopper what they left, make returning one click, answer the doubt that stopped them and, if you use an incentive, save it for the last message. The generator writes a subject, preview text and body for all three emails around those jobs.
When should abandoned cart emails be sent?
A common rhythm is about an hour after the cart is left, then about a day later, then two to three days after. These are our suggested gaps, not a measured optimum; your email platform lets you adjust them.
Should I offer a discount in an abandoned cart email?
If you do, put it in the last email only. A discount in the first reminder rewards people for leaving and trains regular customers to wait. You can also run the sequence with no incentive at all.
Can I use this abandoned cart email template in Shopify or Klaviyo?
Yes. The output is plain text you paste into the abandoned checkout email in Shopify or into the cart flow of any email platform, Klaviyo included. Your platform inserts the cart items where the brackets say.
Why does nobody get my cart emails?
Often because the shopper never left an address. A cart flow can only email people it knows. Collecting an address earlier in the visit, before the shopper heads for the exit, is what widens the group these emails can reach.
What is the difference between cart and checkout abandonment?
Cart abandonment covers anyone who added a product and drifted off; checkout abandonment is narrower, meaning shoppers who reached the payment step, typed contact details, then quit. Shopify tracks the second kind natively because that step captures an email address. Browsers who never reached checkout stay anonymous unless an earlier signup identified them.
Is my store name stored?
No. The emails are written in your browser. Nothing is saved and there is no share link.
The sequence reaches the shoppers you can email. The rest left without saying who they were.
Exit intent, cart value and items in cart are triggers in Nudgesmart, so a signup popup can ask the shopper with a full cart for an address as they move to leave.
