Shopify newsletter signup form generator

Last updated

Start from a design

One click and a working form appears below. The wording and colours are ours to begin with, and step 2 is where they become yours.

Your signup form

Pick one of the three designs above. The form, in all three of its states, and the Liquid you paste both appear here.

Parts of a native signup form

A Shopify newsletter signup form is a block on a storefront page that collects an email address and saves it as a customer who agreed to email marketing, and this generator writes one on the native customer form with the newsletter tag, a thank-you state and an error line, ready to paste into a Custom Liquid section.

No sign-up rate is promised or implied. How many visitors subscribe depends on the offer, the traffic and where the form sits, and nobody can tell you that number for your store in advance.

Nothing here talks to an outside service. The form posts to your own store, and each part below decides what that post does.

Customer form
The form Shopify gives every theme for collecting a subscriber. It posts to the store, creates a customer record or updates the one that already has that address, and redirects back to the same page. No script, no key, no account elsewhere.
The newsletter tag
A hidden field that tags the new customer and marks them as subscribed to email marketing. The generator always writes it and appends your extra tags after it, up to 3, so a tag such as blog or footer tells you later which form the address came from.
Thank-you and error states
After a successful post the form is replaced by your thank-you line. If the address is rejected, Shopify prints its own reason in your store language above the field, and the address the shopper typed stays filled in.
Consent line
A short sentence under the button saying what people are signing up to and that they can leave. The generator does not require one, but it flags its absence, because the rules on this differ by country.
Scoped styles
Every rule in the style block is prefixed with the form id, so the colours and spacing apply to this form only and nothing else on the page changes.

Nudgesmart is available on the Shopify App Store. Browse the template library or see what it costs.

Four forms, and what each one produces

Invented stores. The tags, the field count and each warning come from the same function the generator runs.

Worked examples: form settings, the customer tags written, the fields, and any warning
ScenarioCustomer tagsFieldsConsent lineWhat the generator says
Homepage section, email onlynewsletterEmailYesNothing to flag
Blog footer, first name and a source tagnewsletter, blog, recipesFirst name, emailYesNothing to flag
No consent line, too many tagsnewsletter, vip, spring, launchEmailNoneOnly 3 extra tags are kept. The rest were dropped. There is no consent line. Where you sell may require you to say what shoppers are signing up for and how to unsubscribe, next to the button.
Heading left blank———Give the form a heading, the one line that says why anyone should sign up.
Row three is still a working form, and the generator builds it, but it keeps three extra tags out of five and points out the missing consent line. Row four produces nothing, because a form without a heading gives nobody a reason to type.

Before you rely on it for list growth

A form in the page waits to be found

An inline form sits where you put it. Shoppers who never scroll to the footer, or who leave from the product page, never see it. Placement matters more than wording.

Nothing is sent when someone signs up

The form saves the address in Shopify. A welcome message, a discount code or a series only happens if your email tool is set up to send it to new subscribers.

Consent rules are yours to check

Some places require a clear statement of what people receive and how to stop it, and some require a confirmation step. A consent line from a generator is a starting sentence, not legal advice.

Spam protection is Shopify, not this code

Storefront forms can be challenged by the protection Shopify applies to them. If sign-ups look automated, check the spam settings in your online store preferences rather than editing the form.

Newsletter signup questions

How do I add a newsletter signup form to Shopify?

Open the theme editor, add a Custom Liquid section to the page you want, and paste the generated block into it. It uses the customer form built into Shopify, so it works without an app and saves each address as a subscribed customer.

Where do the email addresses go?

Into Customers in your Shopify admin, each marked as subscribed to email marketing and tagged newsletter. Any email tool connected to your store can pick them up from there.

Can I ask for a first name too?

Yes. Turn on the first name field and the form adds a second input that saves into the customer first name. Every extra field lowers the chance someone finishes, so add it only if you will use it.

Why tag subscribers by form?

Because a customer record does not say which form it came from. A tag such as footer or blog lets you filter customers later and see which placement actually gathers addresses.

Can this form appear as a popup instead?

Not as written. It is a section that sits in the page. Showing a form in a popup at a chosen moment, such as when a shopper is about to leave, needs a script or an app that decides when to open it.

Is anything sent to Nudgesmart when I use this?

No. The block is written in your browser from the values in the form, and nothing you type is stored or sent.

Get started

A signup form in the footer is a form few shoppers reach.

Nudgesmart can show a signup as a popup when a visitor shows exit intent, one of its named triggers, starting from a ready-made email capture template.
