How do I write a product description for my store?

Last updated

What is it?

The name as it appears on the product page.

Sets the generic word the draft falls back on.

List 3 to 5 features or benefits

Short phrases, one per box. Each is kept whole in every draft.

Add detail and a voice

Material and audience are optional.

Length
Your drafts

Name the product and list at least 3 features, then press Draft descriptions. Nothing is written until you do.

The parts of a product description

A product description generator turns the facts you already know about an item into a structured first draft, so a name, three features and a material become three short descriptions, each leading with a different angle, plus a bullet list ready to paste into your product page and rewrite in your own voice.

The drafts come from hand-written sentence frames filled with your own facts, not from a language model, and they are a starting point to edit rather than finished copy.

Each draft is assembled from the same few ingredients. Knowing what each one is for makes the rewrite faster, because you can see which sentence is doing which job.

Features and benefits
The facts that carry the description, between 3 and 5 of them. Write each as a short phrase, such as Breathes on hot days or Padded chest plate. A benefit says what the buyer gets; a feature says what the item has. Both work, and the draft keeps each phrase whole instead of splicing it into someone else's grammar.
Angle
What the draft leads with. One opens with who the item is for, one with how it feels to use, and one with the plain facts in a single list. Same facts, different first sentence, so you can hear which suits the item.
Audience
Optional. The person or situation the item is for, such as dogs who pull or a crowded desk. Leave it blank and the draft falls back on a general use for the product type.
Material
Optional. What it is made of, such as recycled ripstop nylon. It gets its own sentence in every draft and its own line in the bullet list, because buyers scan for it.
Tone
The voice of the opening and closing lines: warm, plain, premium or playful. Your features are never reworded to match; only the sentences around them change.
Bullet version
The same facts as a scannable list, one per line, with the material and audience added last. Most product pages carry both a short paragraph and a list like this below it.

Five products, drafted from their facts

Invented products, not customer data. Each row runs through the same function as the builder above with the wording seed at its starting value, so the opening of the first draft here is exactly what the builder prints for those inputs. The last row shows what happens with too few features.

Two features onlyHarbour Mug2 of 5, materialwarm, shortAdd at least 3 features or benefits (you have 2). The drafts are built out of them, so fewer than 3 leaves nothing to say.—
The charger row uses all five facts, so its drafts run longest; the face oil row is set to short and keeps three. The mug row stops at two features and gets a request for a third instead of a thin draft.

Where a template draft falls short

It only knows what you typed

The builder cannot see the item, the photos or the reviews. Anything true about the product that you did not enter is missing from every draft, and anything you typed wrongly is repeated faithfully.

Frames repeat across products

Run fifty items through it and the openings start to rhyme. That is fine for a first pass on a large catalogue; on the items that matter most, rewrite the first sentence by hand.

It makes no claims for you, and checks none

If a feature you enter is a claim, such as waterproof or hypoallergenic, the draft repeats it as written. Whether you can say it about your product is your call to check, not something this page verifies.

Search ranking is not part of this

The drafts are written for a person reading the page. They are not tuned for a keyword and say nothing about how a product page will rank.

Product description questions

Does this use AI to write product descriptions?

No. It fills hand-written sentence frames with the facts you type, picked by a fixed seed, so the same inputs always return the same drafts. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere; it all runs in the page.

Can I paste these drafts straight onto my product page?

You can, but treat them as scaffolding. They are grammatical and they are yours to use, but they only know what you told them. The details that sell an item, how it fits, what it replaced, what reviewers keep mentioning, still have to come from you.

How long should a product description be?

Long enough to answer the questions a buyer would otherwise email you about, and no longer. The short setting keeps three facts and drops the closing line; the standard one uses every fact you give it. A simple item often needs only the short version plus a bullet list.

Why does it need at least three features?

Because the drafts are built out of them. With one or two facts there is nothing to arrange, and the result would be padding around a single sentence. Three gives each angle something different to lead with.

Will duplicate wording hurt me if other stores use this tool?

The frames are generic, so two stores selling similar things could get similar openings. Your features, name and material make each draft different, and rewriting the first sentence in your own words removes the overlap entirely. Treat the draft as a start, not a finish.

What does Another wording do?

It picks a different opening and closing line from the same bank, keeping every fact you typed. Press it until one reads right, then edit from there.

A clear product page still loses the browsers who were not ready to buy.

Nudgesmart builds the popup that catches that browser from a ready-made template, grouped by industry and campaign type.
