Product labels for Shopify

Last updated

Start from a store like yours

Each one fills in sample label rules. Change them in step 2 and the plan updates as you type.

Your product labels

Pick one of the three stores above. Your labels in the order they win, which ones never show, what each sample product card would carry and a live preview of the app’s labels appear here.

The parts of a product label

Product labels for Shopify are small tags such as New, 20% off or Sold out in a corner of each product card on collection, search and home pages, and this tool puts your label rules in order, flags labels that clash with your theme badges or never show, and previews them before you set them up in the Nudgesmart app.

The six-rule limit, the 40-character text, the corners and the way a label steps aside for your theme’s badge are the ones the Product labels widget uses in the Nudgesmart app. Every widget layout the app offers is on the store widgets page, and the steps to switch labels on are in the product labels help article.

A label earns its place only when it tells a shopper something the photo and price do not. These are the pieces the tool weighs, in the words the app uses for them.

Label rule
One label and the products it goes on, such as New on products added in the last 30 days. The app takes up to 6 rules, each with up to 40 characters of text.
First matching rule wins
A card carries one label at most. When a product fits two rules, the one higher in your list is the one shoppers see, so order is the whole game.
Compare-at price
The higher was price set on a product in Shopify. A product with one above its price counts as on sale. A label with the discount in it shows only when every option of the product is on sale, and then shows the smallest discount among them.
Added to your store recently
The New rule. It counts from the day a product was added to your store, from 1 to 365 days, and starts at 30. Publishing an older product today does not make it new.
Theme badge
The Sale or Sold out mark most themes print on their own. A sale or discount label never sits beside it, and with the skip setting on, a Sold out label steps aside where the theme already says Sold out.
Corner
Where the label sits on the product photo: top or bottom, on the near or far side. If your theme badge sits along the same top or bottom edge, the label moves to the other edge so the two never share a row.
Style
Solid in your theme text colour, Outline, or Accent in your theme button colour. Labels always take your theme colours, so they look like part of the store.
App embed
A switch in the Shopify theme editor that lets an app add something to every page. Product labels show only while the Nudgesmart site widgets embed is on.

Nudgesmart switches widgets like this one on across your store as an app embed, in your theme’s colours by default, and is available on the Shopify App Store. See every widget layout or see what it costs.

Five label setups and what the plan says

Invented stores with typical rules. Every verdict comes from the same plan the tool above builds, with the same sample product cards.

Worked examples: the label rules typed, the verdict on each and what the tool flags
ScenarioTypedVerdictsWhat the tool says
Sale collection, every product discountedSale on on sale; New on added to your store in the last 30 days. no theme badgesSale: Rarely shows, New: KeepLabel 1: You expect every product on a 24-product page to match it, and a label every card shares is left off that page. It still shows on pages where only some products match.
Discount on a tag rule, theme shows its own Sale badge20% off on tagged clearance. theme shows its own badges20% off: Never showsLabel 1: A label with the discount in it shows only on products that are on sale, and those carry your theme’s Sale badge, which a discount label never sits beside.
Sold out placed below New, theme with no badgesNew on added to your store in the last 30 days; Sold out on sold out. no theme badgesNew: Keep, Sold out: Move upLabel 2: Products that fit it often fit label 1, New, first, and the first match wins. Move it above label 1 if it matters more. Sold out sits below New, so a new product that sells out keeps saying New. Put Sold out first.
Six labels on one storeSold out on sold out; New on added to your store in the last 30 days; Bestseller on tagged bestseller; Gift idea on tagged gift; Limited edition release on tagged limited; Bestseller on tagged bestseller. theme shows its own badgesSold out: Rarely shows, New: Keep, Bestseller: Keep, Gift idea: Keep, Limited edition release: Keep, Bestseller: Never showsLabel 1: Your theme already says Sold out on those cards, so this label steps aside there. Keep it for a theme or a page that shows no badge of its own. Label 6: Label 3 already covers the same products, and the first match wins.
Popup code reminderYour 10% applies on shopper holds a code from your popup. theme shows its own badgesYour 10% applies: KeepNothing to flag
The second row is the commonest surprise: a discount label on a theme that already prints its own Sale badge never shows, because the two never share a card. The first row shows the other quiet case, a label every product on the page carries, which is left off that page.

What the plan cannot see

It cannot see your products

How many products a rule fits is your estimate. The plan uses sample cards to show who wins, so check a real collection page once the labels are on.

Themes place badges differently

Some themes put the sale badge top left, some bottom left, some none at all. Look at one discounted product on a collection page and tell the tool what you see.

Only product cards carry labels

Labels sit on the product cards your theme draws in collections, search, the home page and recommendations. They never show in your header, menus or pop-up windows.

A label is a claim

Sale must be a real discount and Bestseller must be true. A label shoppers catch out once makes every label on the store easier to ignore.

Options priced differently

When only some options of a product are on sale, a label with the discount in it skips that product rather than show a number not every option has. A plain Sale label still shows there.

Product label questions

How do I add product labels to Shopify?

In the Nudgesmart app, create a Product labels widget, add your rules in order and publish it. Then switch on Nudgesmart site widgets under App embeds in the theme editor and save. One labels widget covers the whole store.

Can a label show the real discount?

Yes. A label can put the discount in its text, such as 20% off. It shows only on products where every option is on sale, and then shows the smallest discount among them, so it never claims more than a shopper gets.

Why does my sale label not show?

Most often because your theme already prints its own Sale badge on that product, and a sale or discount label never sits beside it. Turn the theme sale badge off in the theme editor if you want yours instead. A sale label is also left off a page where every product is on sale, such as a sale collection.

How many labels can one product have?

One. The app checks your rules from the top and shows the first that fits, so put the label that matters most first.

Can I label products by tag, like Bestseller?

Yes. Add a rule for a tag, a product type or a vendor and type the value as it is spelled in Shopify. Capital letters and spaces at either end do not matter. There is no collection rule, so tag the products instead.

Can a label remind shoppers about their discount code?

Yes, if a Nudgesmart popup gave them a code. The code label shows only to shoppers holding one, on up to 2 cards a page, never on a sold-out product and never beside your theme badge.

Get started

Shoppers scroll a collection in seconds. A label tells them what changed.

Nudgesmart product labels put one small label on each product card across your store, from up to six rules you set once, in your theme’s own colours.
