What would a video popup look like on my store?

Last updated

Step 1 of 3 · choose a video design

Pick a design and it opens as a working video popup on the real storefront code, clip playing. Your headline, button and brand colour are edits to it from there.

What you set on a video popup

A video popup is an on-site popup that plays a short, muted clip behind or beside its offer, so the words on top have to work without sound: a streetwear store that shows a looping clip under the headline Members get it first and a button that reads Get early access passes every check, while a twelve-word headline over the same clip does not.

The designs are video popups from the Nudgesmart template library, rendered by the same storefront code a merchant ships. The copy check uses fixed rules about length and wording; it measures nothing about any store.

The design carries the clip, the layout and the form. You change the three lines of text and the brand colour, then watch it play at phone size.

Video design
A popup from the Nudgesmart template library with a real clip in it. Each one is laid out for a phone first, with the text placed where the picture is quietest.
Headline
The line a shopper reads while the clip moves. It is checked for length and for whether it says what the shopper gets, because most clips start muted.
Supporting line
One sentence under the headline for the detail: what the list sends, how often, or what the code is worth. Keep it short enough to read in one glance.
Button label
What the shopper taps. It is checked for an opening action word and for a length that fits one line of a phone button.
Brand colour
Recolours the main button and the accents so the popup matches the store. The clip itself is not recoloured.
Muted reading
The test the checks stand for: with the sound off and the picture moving, can a shopper still tell what the popup offers and what the button does?

Six headline and button pairs over video

Invented stores. Each pair was run through the same copy check the maker above uses, and the verdict and main note come straight from it.

The three pairs that need work fail in different ways. The roaster says too much for a moving background, the jeweller says too little (a mood with no offer, easy to watch and hard to act on), and the homeware button spends a whole sentence on the word here.

Before a video popup goes on your store

A clip is heavier than a photo

Video costs more to download than an image. Keep the clip short and let it start after the page has loaded, so the product page itself is never waiting on the popup.

Plan for the sound being off

Phones and browsers generally start video muted. Anything the clip says out loud has to be in the words on top as well, or the offer is lost.

Motion is not for every visitor

Some people set their device to reduce motion. Check how your theme and popup behave for them, and never put the only copy of the offer inside the moving picture.

The preview is not your targeting

This page shows how the popup looks and reads. Who sees it, on which page and how often are separate decisions, and they matter more to results than the clip does.

Questions about video popups

What is a video popup?

A popup that uses a short moving clip as its background or hero instead of a still image. The offer, the form and the button sit on top, exactly as they would on a normal popup.

Do video popups slow a store down?

They can if the clip is large or starts before the page is ready. A short, compressed loop that begins after the page has loaded keeps the cost low. Test the page on a phone connection before and after.

Should a video popup play sound?

No. Browsers usually block sound until the visitor interacts, and an unexpected noise drives people away. Write the popup so it makes complete sense muted.

What should the headline say?

The one thing the shopper gets, in about seven words or fewer: early access, a first-order discount, a members list. The clip sets the mood; the headline does the explaining.

Does this tool add the popup to my store?

No. It renders the design with your words and colour so you can judge it at phone size. Nothing is installed and nothing you type is stored.
