Who, when and how often

Popup targeting is the set of choices that decide which visitors see a popup, at what moment and how often, so a shopper leaving with items in the cart can get a last-chance offer while a first-time visitor gets a welcome instead.

Every condition, setting and rule listed here is one a merchant can pick in the Nudgesmart app today, under the name the app gives it. Descriptions are the app’s own, reworded in places for clarity. A few internal diagnostic conditions are left off, and the conditions inside each ready-made rule are not published here.

The tabs above follow the order you set targeting up in the app: who the popup is for, the moment it fires, how often it repeats. The app offers 147 targeting conditions; a few internal diagnostic ones are left off this page.

Who conditions
Checks on who the visitor is: where they are, whether they are signed in, what they have bought, how they arrived, the page and cart. Every who condition in a rule must match.
When conditions
Checks on what the visitor is doing right now, such as scrolling, pausing, heading for the exit or adding to the cart, plus the time, the weather and holidays. The popup fires on whichever happens first.
Signed-in only
Conditions that read the customer account, such as purchase history or customer tags. They can only match a shopper who is signed in; a guest looks like any other visitor to them. They carry a tag in the list above.
How often
Once a shopper matches, the frequency setting caps how often they see the popup, and the stop setting decides whether it ends once they convert. Priority breaks the tie when two campaigns qualify at once.
Smart Targeting
A mode that decides the moment for you from 43 signals, instead of conditions you write. You set how selective it is, the pages and the audience.
Holiday targeting
Holiday calendars for 230 countries, with timing on the day, before, after or around a holiday, so a seasonal popup runs without you typing dates each year.
Ready-made rule
A rule that comes with Nudgesmart, already built from these conditions, with a name and a plain description. Pick one and a campaign is targeted in one click; once added, it is yours to change.

One goal, one rule, one campaign

Three goals, each matched to a ready-made rule and the kind of campaign it suits. The rows come from the same list the Ready-made rules tab shows.

Worked examples: a merchant goal, the ready-made rule that fits it and the campaign it suits
GoalReady-made ruleWhat it doesUse it for
Recover carts and exitsExit Intent Cart RecoveryLast chance offer for visitors with cart items showing exit intent. An exit-intent popup with a last-chance offer
Welcome new visitorsNew Visitor WelcomeDisplay a welcome popup for brand-new visitors. An email capture popup with a welcome offer
Reward VIPs and regularsVIP Customer ExclusiveExclusive early access or VIP-only deals for high-value and tagged VIP customers.A VIP or loyalty offer popup
A shopper can match more than one of these rows at once, such as a signed-in VIP who is about to leave with a full cart. Each rule is attached to its own campaign, so which popup that shopper sees depends on the campaigns you switch on.

What targeting will not decide for you

Conditions apply in Custom rules mode

New campaigns start in Smart Targeting, where the app picks the moment. The conditions on this page are what you use when you switch a campaign to Custom rules and decide the who and when yourself.

Some conditions only see signed-in customers

Anything read from the customer account, such as purchase history, customer tags or marketing consent, needs the shopper to be signed in. A guest who has not signed in will not match them, so pair them with a condition that works for guests if you want to reach everyone.

Location and weather are where the visitor appears to be

Country, region and city go by where the visitor seems to be browsing from, which a travelling shopper or a private network can blur. Weather conditions need that location too, so they cannot match a visitor whose location is unknown.

Social proof works differently

Social proof notifications do not use these conditions. They run on their own settings, so the lists above apply to popups, bars and games rather than to social proof.

A rule decides who and when, not what to say

The right targeting on the wrong offer is still the wrong offer. Targeting puts the popup in front of the right shopper; the headline, the incentive and the design still have to earn the click.

Narrow targeting means small audiences

Stacking conditions makes a popup more relevant and seen by fewer people. A rule that almost nobody matches is quiet rather than broken, so check who it reaches before deciding it does not work.

Popup targeting questions

What is popup targeting?

Deciding who sees a popup and when. Without it every visitor gets the same popup at the same moment, so a returning customer is asked to sign up again and a shopper about to leave with a full cart sees nothing. Targeting checks things like the page, the cart, where the visitor came from and what they are doing, and only shows the popup when those match.

What can I target a popup on in Nudgesmart?

The app offers 147 targeting conditions, in two kinds. Who the visitor is: location and language, signed-in account and purchase history, new or returning, traffic source, the page and product, the cart and checkout, and whether they are already on your list. And what they are doing right now: engagement, signs of leaving, the device, the cart, forms, the time and date, the weather and holidays.

How do who and when conditions combine?

Every who condition in a rule must match, while the when conditions fire on whichever happens first. So a rule for signed-in customers on a product page, firing on exit or after a long pause, shows only to signed-in shoppers on product pages, at the first sign of either.

What is Smart Targeting?

The other way to run a campaign. Instead of writing conditions, Smart Targeting reads 43 signals from how each shopper behaves and shows the popup when they look most likely to act. You set three things: how selective it is, which pages it runs on and which audience it covers. New campaigns start in Smart Targeting, and you can switch any campaign to your own rules.

Can I target holidays in my country?

Yes. Nudgesmart has Holiday calendars for 230 countries. You can show a popup on the holiday itself, for a number of days before or after it, or across a range around it, and choose whether any or all of the dates you pick must apply.

Can I show a popup only to people on my Klaviyo list?

Yes, with the In Klaviyo list condition, or skip people already on your list with Already a subscriber. Both only recognise shoppers Klaviyo has already identified, such as someone who submitted a form or clicked one of your emails. Anyone else counts as unknown and will not match either way.

How often will a shopper see the popup?

You choose: every page view, once per session, once per day or once per week. You also choose whether it stops for good once the shopper converts, such as signing up or spinning. When two campaigns qualify at once, the one with the higher priority shows first, and only one popup is on screen at a time.

Does exit intent work on mobile?

Yes, but it cannot work the way it does on a desktop, because a phone has no cursor to leave the window. On mobile the app watches for other signs a shopper is leaving, such as a quick scroll back to the top, the back button or switching to another tab.

Do I need to write code?

No. Conditions are chosen from lists and ready-made rules are picked in one click. Two developer conditions exist for stores that want them, one for data your theme sends and one for a short piece of your own code, but nothing requires them.

Why is part of the list locked on this page?

This page shows a preview of every group. Unlocking with your email opens the full list here. It is only a gate on this page: every condition and ready-made rule comes with the app, so installing Nudgesmart gives you all of them.

Get started

Picking the audience is the easy half. Reaching it is the job.

Everything above is in Nudgesmart. Pick who and when from 147 targeting conditions or start from a ready-made rule, attach it to a campaign, and the popup only shows to the shoppers it describes.
