Icons With Text on Shopify: Which Benefits to Show

A row of icons with short lines can answer three questions at a glance, or say nothing at all. How to pick the benefits, word them as facts, and keep every claim defensible.

Three facts at a glance

The icons-with-text row is one of the most common blocks on Shopify home and product pages: a few small symbols, each with a line underneath. Done well, it answers the questions a new visitor has in the time it takes to scroll past. Done badly, it is decoration that says "Quality", "Fast" and "Secure" and is never read again.

The difference is entirely in the words. The icons with text tool for Shopify helps you choose and word the items, then previews them as a real store widget.

Benefits, stated as facts

The usual advice is to show benefits rather than features. The better advice is to show benefits the shopper can check. Compare:

  • "Fast shipping" against "Ships within two working days".
  • "Easy returns" against "30-day returns, free label".
  • "Premium materials" against "Full-grain leather, stitched by hand".

The second version of each is more believable because it could be wrong, and you are standing behind it anyway. If a line could appear on any store in any category, it is not doing work for yours.

How many, and which ones

Three or four items is the usual sweet spot. Past that, the row turns into texture. To choose them, look at the questions people ask before buying: in your inbox, in chat, in reviews. The items worth showing are the answers to the most common of those, plus anything that genuinely sets you apart.

Keep the lines parallel in form, so they read as a set: all short phrases, or all short sentences, not a mix. Put the condition in the line rather than a footnote, as in "free delivery over 50 dollars".

Every icon needs its words

Nielsen Norman Group's research on icon usability found that very few icons are recognised by everyone, and recommends a visible text label for almost every icon. The icon helps the eye find the item; the text tells the shopper what it means. A leaf, a truck or a shield on its own can be read several ways.

Purely decorative icons should be hidden from screen readers, so the text is read once rather than "image, leaf, sustainably made".

Claims that need evidence

Some of the most popular lines are regulated claims:

  • Environmental claims. "Eco-friendly", "sustainable" and "green" are covered by the FTC's Green Guides (16 CFR Part 260) in the US and the CMA's Green Claims Code in the UK. In the EU, the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (2024/825), applied from September 2026, bans generic environmental claims that cannot be backed by recognised excellent environmental performance. Be specific and keep the evidence.
  • Origin claims. An unqualified "Made in USA" must meet the FTC's Made in USA Labeling Rule (16 CFR Part 323). Other countries have their own origin rules.
  • Vegan, cruelty-free, organic, handmade. Each implies something checkable. Only use them if you can show how.

This is general information, not legal advice. When in doubt, a specific, provable line is safer than a broad one.

Row, grid or list

  • Row. Three or four items across, typically under the homepage hero or above the footer.
  • Grid. More items, or longer lines, in two or three columns. Suits an about or brand page.
  • List. Items stacked in a narrow column, which fits next to product information near the buy button.

Icons with text overlap with trust badges. A useful split: icons with text describe what makes your products and brand worth buying, and trust badges answer purchase worries such as returns and secure payment. The trust badge generator covers the second job.

Next step

Write down the three questions new visitors ask most, and answer each in one checkable line. Then open the icons with text tool, which flags vague lines and previews the icons with text widget from the Nudgesmart app with sample content. You add your own items in the app and publish it from there. Every layout is in the store widget gallery.
