Icons with text for Shopify

Each one loads sample lines, some of them deliberately flawed. Replace them with yours in step 2 and the sorting updates as you type.

How the lines get sorted
Icons with text on Shopify is a store section that pairs a small icon with a short line, usually three or four of them, to give shoppers quick reasons to buy, and this tool sorts the lines you type into ones to keep, ones to rewrite and claims that need evidence before they go live.
Green-claim flags follow the UK CMA Green Claims Code and the FTC Green Guides (16 CFR Part 260); the advice to keep a text label beside every icon comes from Nielsen Norman Group usability research. All three layouts are on the store widgets page, and setting one up is covered in the store widgets help article.
A row of icons is read in a second or two, usually on a phone, right beside the price. Each line has to earn that second. These are the labels the tool puts on what you type.
- Benefit
- What the shopper gets: drinks still cold at the end of the day, a jumper that does not shrink, a reply from a person. These are the lines worth an icon.
- Feature
- A fact about the product itself, such as a material, a measurement or a part. True and often useful, but it leaves the shopper to work out why it matters. The tool keeps one only when it is short of better lines, and asks for the result to be added.
- Vague claim
- Praise nobody could check, such as best quality, premium or world class, and one-word labels like Comfort. They take up a slot and tell the shopper nothing they did not assume already.
- Environmental claim
- Any line saying the product or packaging is better for the planet. Broad words like eco-friendly or sustainable get flagged hardest; narrower ones like recycled or compostable still need a qualifier and the evidence behind them.
- Store promise
- Delivery, returns and guarantee lines. They are strong reasons to buy and also commitments, so the tool reminds you to match them to the policy a shopper can read.
- Keep, rewrite, spare
- Up to 6 lines go in and 3 or 4 come out as keepers. Flagged lines are marked to rewrite, and good lines beyond the limit are spares for another page or another product.
- Row, grid or list
- The three layouts the app offers. A row suits three short lines that shoppers swipe on a phone, a grid suits four, and a list gives longer lines the full width with the icon beside each one.
Nudgesmart adds widgets like this one to your store from the theme editor, in your theme’s fonts and colours by default, and is available on the Shopify App Store. See every widget layout or see what it costs.
Five sets of lines, sorted
Invented shops and wording. Which lines are kept, the icon each one gets and every flag come from the same check the tool above runs.
| Scenario | Kept (icon) | Layout | Rewrite or spare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water bottle, specs typed as benefits | Keeps drinks cold for hours (clock) | Row | Double-walled stainless steel: This describes the product, not what the shopper gets from it. Add the result, such as what the material lets them do or stop worrying about. 750ml capacity: This describes the product, not what the shopper gets from it. Add the result, such as what the material lets them do or stop worrying about. BPA-free lid: This describes the product, not what the shopper gets from it. Add the result, such as what the material lets them do or stop worrying about. |
| Home page, six store promises | Next-day UK delivery (shipping); 30-day returns (returns); Secure checkout (secure); Real people answer your emails (support) | Grid | Gift wrapping on request: spare Best prices online: Praise with nothing a shopper could check. Name the thing that makes it good, such as the material, the test or the guarantee. |
| Skincare, green wording | Gentle on sensitive skin (heart); Lasts about three months (quality) | Row | Eco-friendly formula: A broad environmental claim. The UK CMA Green Claims Code and the FTC Green Guides both expect a green claim to be specific and backed by evidence. Say exactly what is better and by how much, or leave it out. Recyclable glass jar: This describes the product, not what the shopper gets from it. Add the result, such as what the material lets them do or stop worrying about. |
| Long lines in a row | Every pair is cut and stitched by hand in our workshop in Porto by a team of six (quality); Leather softens and moulds to your foot within the first week of wear (heart); Resoling service for the life of the shoe (check mark) | List | Nothing to flag |
| One-word labels | none yet | — | Quality: One word is a label, not a reason. Say what it means for the shopper. Comfort: One word is a label, not a reason. Say what it means for the shopper. Style: One word is a label, not a reason. Say what it means for the shopper. |
Where a clean result is not enough
It reads words, not facts
A line can pass every check and still be untrue for your shop. The tool cannot see your supplier paperwork or your returns policy; it only spots wording that usually causes trouble.
Green claims carry legal weight
The UK CMA Green Claims Code asks that environmental claims be truthful, clear, complete, fair in any comparison, true across the whole life of the product and backed by evidence, and the CMA can now fine businesses directly for misleading consumers. In the US the FTC Green Guides, 16 CFR Part 260, warn that broad claims like eco-friendly are very hard to back up and should be narrowed. In the EU, Directive (EU) 2024/825 bans generic environmental claims that cannot be shown to be excellent, from September 2026.
Comparisons need proof before they run
Best, cheapest and number one are claims about other businesses as much as about yours. Consumer law on both sides of the Atlantic expects a claim a shopper could check to be provable at the moment it is made, not after someone asks.
An icon is not the message
Nielsen Norman Group research on icons found that few are understood without a text label beside them. The line does the work; the icon only helps the eye find it, so a perfect icon will not rescue a weak line.
One set rarely fits every product
Store promises such as delivery and returns work on every page. Product benefits do not: the cold-drinks line means nothing on a tote bag. Keep the spares for the products they describe.
Icons with text questions
How do I add icons with text to a Shopify product page?
In the Nudgesmart app, create an Icons with text widget, add your lines and pick an icon for each, then publish. Add to store opens your Shopify theme editor with the block already added to the page you chose, and it goes live when you save there.
How many icons with text should I use?
Three or four. Fewer looks unfinished in a row, and past four a shopper stops reading and starts skimming. Keep the rest for other pages.
What is the difference between a feature and a benefit?
A feature is what the product has, such as stainless steel walls. A benefit is what that does for the shopper, such as drinks staying cold all day. Lead with the benefit; the feature can follow in the smaller text underneath.
Can I say my product is eco-friendly?
Only with care. Regulators in the UK, the US and the EU treat broad green words as claims that need evidence, and they prefer something specific, such as packaging made from recycled card, with the paperwork to show it.
Which icons can I choose from?
The app widget offers 12 icons: check mark, shipping, returns, secure, guarantee, support, quality, eco, gift, star, heart, clock. The tool suggests one per line from the same set, and you can change it in the app.
Should I use a row, a grid or a list?
A row for three short lines, a grid for four, and a list when the lines are long or carry a sentence of detail each. The preview on this page shows all three on a sample store page, on a phone and a desktop.
Does the tool check whether my claims are true?
No. It flags wording that tends to mislead or that regulators look at closely. Whether a line is true for your shop is something only your own records can show.
Shoppers scan before they read.
