Social media icons for Shopify

Last updated

Start from a use case

Each one fills in sample profile links, a few of them deliberately wrong. Paste your own in step 2 and the checks update as you type.

Your social row

Pick one of the three use cases above. The cleaned usernames, the ones to fix, the layout and colour advice and a live preview of the app’s widget appear here.

The parts of a social row

Social media icons for Shopify are a row of small logos that link to the store profiles on networks such as Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest, and this tool cleans the links you paste down to usernames, flags the ones that will not work and suggests which to show and how before you add the Social links widget in the Nudgesmart app.

The username rules are the ones the app checks for each network, and a pasted link is read the same way the app reads it. Both layouts are on the store widgets page, and the steps to set the row up are in the social links help article.

Most broken social icons fail on the link, not the design: a post pasted instead of a profile, a personal page instead of the business one. These are the pieces the tool looks at, in the words the app uses for them.

Username
The account name after the network address, such as wren.and.ash in instagram.com/wren.and.ash. The Social links widget stores the username only, and makes the link to each network from it.
Profile link
The address of the account page. Paste it and the app keeps just the username, and so does this tool, dropping the https, the www, the @ and anything after a question mark.
Post or video link
The address of one post, reel, pin or video. It names a piece of content, not the account, so it cannot become a profile link. Open the profile and use its address instead.
Company page
For LinkedIn, the widget links to a company page, the name after linkedin.com/company/. A personal profile, the kind under linkedin.com/in/, is not taken.
Icons only or Icons with names
The two layouts the app offers. Icons only is a compact row of logos. Icons with names puts the network name beside each logo, which helps when the row is long or a logo is new.
Use brand colors
A setting in the app. Off, which is the default, the icons follow your theme colours. On, each network shows in its own brand colours. Snapchat keeps its yellow tile either way.

Nudgesmart adds widgets like this one to your store from the theme editor, in your theme’s fonts and colours by default, and is available on the Shopify App Store. See every widget layout or see what it costs.

Five sets of profile links, cleaned

Invented shops and usernames. Which usernames are ready, the layout and colour advice and every flag come from the same check the tool above runs.

Worked examples: what was pasted, the usernames ready for the app, and what the tool says
ScenarioPastedReady for the appWhat the tool says
Links pasted straight from the address barInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/wren.and.ash/?hl=enTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@wren.and.ashPinterest: https://uk.pinterest.com/wrenandash/Instagram wren.and.ashTikTok wren.and.ashPinterest wrenandashIcons only, brand colours off.
A post and a shared video instead of the profilesInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C3xAmPl3qQ/TikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMabc123/YouTube: @glowroomskinYouTube glowroomskinThat is a link to one Instagram post or video, not to the profile. Open your profile and paste its address instead. That is a share link to one TikTok video, not to the profile. Paste your @username instead. Icons only, brand colours on.
A personal LinkedIn and an old Twitter linkYouTube: youtube.com/@fieldkitsupplyX: https://twitter.com/fieldkitsupplyLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sam-okafor-fieldkit/YouTube fieldkitsupplyX fieldkitsupplyThat is a personal LinkedIn profile. The widget links to a company page: the name after linkedin.com/company/. You started from Icons only. For this row, Icons with names reads better; switch the layout in the preview below to compare. Icons with names, brand colours on.
Seven networks for a home storeInstagram: hearthandfernTikTok: hearthandfernFacebook: hearthandfernYouTube: HearthAndFernPinterest: hearthandfernX: hearthandfernThreads: hearthandfernPinterest hearthandfernInstagram hearthandfernYouTube HearthAndFernFacebook hearthandfernTikTok hearthandfernThat is 7 profiles. Past 5 a row turns into a strip of logos, so leave out Threads and X, the ones that fit a home and decor store least. Icons with names, brand colours off.
A TikTok link in the Instagram box, and a Telegram channelInstagram: https://www.tiktok.com/@crumbandcellarFacebook: crumbandcellarAlso: https://t.me/crumbandcellarFacebook crumbandcellarThat is a TikTok link in the Instagram box. Left there, it would point the Instagram icon at the wrong account. Move crumbandcellar to the TikTok box. Telegram is a chat app, not a social profile. It belongs on the Chat button widget in the Nudgesmart app, not in this row. Icons only, brand colours off.
The first row is the common case: links copied from the address bar, tracking bits and all, that clean up into usernames with nothing to fix. In the last row the username itself is fine, which is the trap: in the Instagram box it would send shoppers to an Instagram account that may not be yours.

What the check cannot see

Your footer may already have them

Most Shopify themes have a set of social icons built in, usually in the footer, filled in from the theme settings. If yours does, you do not need a widget for that spot, and the Social links widget does not go in the header or footer anyway. It is for the places the theme setting does not reach: home, product, collection and other pages.

It checks the shape, not the account

A username can be perfectly formed and still belong to someone else, or to an account you closed. Only opening each profile from a phone proves the icon reaches you.

The ranking is a starting point

It comes from what each network is built for, not from data about your shoppers. If your store analytics show visits arriving from a network ranked low here, that network has earned its place.

Every icon is a way out of the page

A shopper who taps through to your profile has left the product for a feed full of other things. That is fine on an about page and costly next to the buy button, which is why the plan says where the row belongs.

A quiet profile costs more than a missing one

An icon promises something worth following. A link to an account that stopped posting a year ago tells shoppers the store may have stopped too.

Names, not partnerships

Every network named here is a trademark of its owner. Nudgesmart is an independent app with no affiliation to any of them; the names appear only to say where the icons link.

Social media icons questions

How do I add social media icons to a Shopify product page?

In the Nudgesmart app, create a Social links widget, tick your networks, type a username for each and publish. Add to store opens your Shopify theme editor with the block already added to the page you chose, and it goes live when you save there.

My theme already shows social icons. Do I need this?

Maybe not. Most themes show social icons in the footer, set in the theme settings, and for that spot they are all you need. The Social links widget is for the places the footer setting does not reach, such as a product page, a collection page, the home page or an about page. It does not go in the header or footer.

Should I paste the profile link or the username?

Either. Paste a profile link or an @username and the app keeps just the username. What does not work is a link to one post or video, a personal LinkedIn profile, or a short share link, because none of them names the account.

Which social networks can the icons link to?

Nine: Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest, X, Threads, Snapchat and LinkedIn company pages. Chat apps such as WhatsApp, Messenger and Telegram go on the Chat button widget instead, and other sites are not part of this row.

How many social icons should a store show?

Three to five, which is also where the tool draws the line. Pick the networks you post on most and that suit what you sell; past that a row of logos gets scanned rather than read, and each extra one is another way off the page.

Should the icons use brand colours or my theme colours?

They start in your theme colours, which keeps the row quiet beside product photos. Turn on Use brand colors in the app when the row is the point of the spot, such as on a contact page with only a few networks. Snapchat keeps its own yellow tile either way.

Is Nudgesmart part of Instagram, TikTok or any of these networks?

No. Nudgesmart is an independent Shopify app with no link to any social network. The icons simply link to the public profiles you choose.
