How to give several codes from one scratch card, each unlocked by spend

Give every shopper their own set of single-use codes from one scratch, such as £10 off over £150, £20 off over £250 and £50 off over £500, and let your countdown bar show the one their basket qualifies for.

One scratch, a set of codes. Each code unlocks at a different spend, so a bigger basket earns a bigger saving, and every shopper gets codes that are theirs alone.

TL;DR

Open your scratch card in the editor and choose The same gift for everyone under What should shoppers win?. Under Codes, pick More off for bigger orders. (With A surprise prize, edit a prize, turn on Generate Shopify discount code, then set Codes to More off for bigger orders.) Add up to five tiers, each with an amount or percentage off and a minimum spend. Each shopper who wins gets their own set of single-use codes. They can use one code per order, and your countdown bar shows the code their basket qualifies for.

What spend tiers do

Instead of one code, a winning shopper gets a set of codes, for example:

  • £10 off orders over £150
  • £20 off orders over £250
  • £50 off orders over £500

Every shopper gets their own unique codes, not shared public ones. Each code works once, and only one of them can be used on an order. The shopper picks the code that matches their basket, or your countdown bar picks it for them.

Amounts and minimum spends are in your store's currency.

Works with other campaigns too

The same setting is on every campaign that gives a code to a shopper who enters their email:

  • Spin wheel: choose The same gift for everyone and set Codes to More off for bigger orders, or edit a slice, turn on Generate real Shopify discount code, then set Codes to More off for bigger orders.
  • Pick-a-present: the same, on a box. A box with a prize already gives a code, so just set Codes.
  • Email popups (including flash sales and quizzes): click the coupon on the reward page and set Codes there.

One code stays the default. Popups that don't ask for an email, such as countdown timers and announcement bars, always give one code. On spin wheel and pick-a-present popups, two or three tiers fit best.

Step 1 · Open the gift or the prize

Open your scratch card popup in the editor and click the scratch card. If every shopper should get the set, choose The same gift for everyone, then under Codes pick More off for bigger orders and skip to Step 3. Otherwise, choose A surprise prize and click Edit on a prize.

Step 2 · Turn on several codes

Turn on Generate Shopify discount code, then set Codes to More off for bigger orders.

The first tier starts from the prize's current discount. The single Discount Type and Discount Value fields are replaced by the tier list.

Step 3 · Add your tiers

For each tier, choose Amount off or Percentage off, type the discount, and type the Minimum spend. Click Add tier for the next one, up to five.

  • Label (optional). Leave it empty to show a label like "£10 off orders over £150". Type your own to change it.
  • Code Prefix. The start of every code, up to 12 characters. Each shopper's codes share it, followed by a number for each tier.
  • Order. Tiers are sorted from the lowest minimum spend to the highest when you save.

Step 4 · Make sure everyone wins the set

With The same gift for everyone, every shopper wins the set. There's nothing else to set up. You no longer need two matching prizes at 50% each.

With A surprise prize, only shoppers who win a prize with tiers get the set. Nudgesmart keeps the chances adding up to 100 for you.

Step 5 · Check the Code settings and save

In the scratch card's Code section, set Code expires after. All the codes in a set expire together. Turn on Combine with other discounts if the codes should work with your sale prices. Then save.

One code per shopper turns on by itself and shows Needed for multiple codes. A shopper who comes back with the same email sees their own codes again, never a new set.

The Minimum Order field in the Code section applies only to single-code prizes. Each tier has its own minimum spend.

What shoppers see

  • One play each. A shopper can scratch once. If the popup shows again, they see their own result, not a new card.

  • In the popup. Every code, each with its label and a copy button. The reward page shows one coupon box per code, styled like the coupon you designed.

  • On your countdown bar and product page timer. The code their basket qualifies for and the time left, or "Spend £40 more to unlock £10 off" before they reach the first tier. View all codes opens the full list with copy buttons.

  • As the basket changes. The code in the cart switches to the best one for the basket. Raise the basket from £160 to £260 and £10 off becomes £20 off.

  • After they use a code. That code disappears. The others keep working and keep showing until they expire.

See How to add a countdown bar to put the bar on your store.

Using the codes with your sale prices

Spend-tier codes are order discounts: money off the whole order. They never combine with each other, which is how only one works per order.

They can combine with product discounts, such as sale prices on certain products, when both sides allow it:

  1. In Nudgesmart, turn on Combine with other discounts in the scratch card's Code section.
  2. On your product discount (in Shopify or the app that creates it), allow combining with order discounts. The setting is usually called "Combinations" or "Combines with".

Shopify takes the product discount off first, then checks the minimum spend and takes the code off what's left.

Tips

  • Keep the reward page short. Each code adds a row. With four or five codes, a tall image or long text makes the popup long on phones.
  • Add the countdown bar. It shows the codes and the time left on every page, and moves shoppers up to the next tier.
  • Write the offer as a ladder. "Spend more, save more" headlines suit a set better than a single number.

Common pitfalls

  • A code was refused at checkout. The basket is under that tier's minimum spend, or the shopper is checking out with a different email from the one they entered.
  • Two codes didn't work together. That's by design: one code per order.
  • The code didn't combine with a sale. Check Combine with other discounts is on in Nudgesmart and that the product discount allows combining with order discounts.
  • A shopper got a second set. Sets are matched by email. A different email gets a new set.
