How to show customer reviews with the testimonials widget

Choose which reviews each testimonials widget shows, pick a layout, publish it, and add it to your home, product or collection pages.

Your reviews live in one place. Each testimonials widget picks which of them to show.

TL;DR

First, get your reviews into Nudgesmart. Import them from your old review app, or add them by hand on the Manage Reviews page. Then create a testimonials widget, choose Which reviews to show, pick a layout and click Publish. Click Add to store to place it. You need an Online Store 2.0 theme.

How reviews and widgets fit together

Nudgesmart keeps all your reviews in one review library. You add or import each review once.

A testimonials widget doesn't hold its own reviews. It holds a rule, such as "5-star reviews with photos" or "reviews for this collection". So you can have a "Best reviews" widget on your home page and a product reviews widget on product pages, both using the same library. Fix a typo in a review once, and every widget that shows it picks up the fix.

Step 1 · Add your reviews

Open Store Widgets and click Manage Reviews. Click Import Reviews to bring them in from a file, or Add Review to type one in.

Only reviews from real customers count as reviews on your store. When you import, you confirm that the reviews are real. When you add one by hand, tick the box that says it's a genuine review.

New stores get a few sample reviews so the preview isn't empty. If you publish before you have real reviews, Nudgesmart asks you to confirm first. Sample reviews then show on your store with a "Sample" tag and never count toward your star rating. They disappear on their own as soon as the widget has a real review to show.

Step 2 · Create the widget

On the Store Widgets page, click Create Widget and pick the testimonials widget.

Give it a clear name under Widget information, such as "What customers say". The name shows as the heading on your store unless you change it in the theme editor.

Step 3 · Choose which reviews to show

Open the Which reviews to show section. Choose a mode, then narrow it down. The editor shows how many reviews match as you go.

Modes:

  • All reviews. Every visible review in your library.
  • Products. Reviews linked to the products you pick.
  • Collections. Reviews linked to products in the collections you pick.
  • Hand-picked. Only the reviews you choose, in the order you choose.

Then narrow it down:

  • Minimum rating, such as 4 stars and up.
  • Photos only.
  • Sort by newest, highest rated, or your hand-picked order.
  • Show up to a set number of reviews, from 1 to 50.

On a product page, the widget shows the reviews for that product. The rating summary at the top (the average and the number of reviews) is for that product too.

The Items tab lists the reviews that match. To change one, click it, then click Edit review. Your widget is saved first.

Step 4 · Pick a layout

Open the Design tab and choose a layout and style.

Your options:

  • Layout. Slider, Grid, List or Scrolling strip.
  • Columns. You can set a different number for mobile.
  • Card style. Plain, Border or Shadow.
  • Show photos, Show stars, Show dates, Show the product and Show the rating summary.
  • Move to the next slide automatically (Slider only), and Seconds per slide.
  • Style, Accent color, Star color and Corners.

Reviews can have up to 4 photos. Shoppers tap a photo to see it larger.

Step 5 · Publish and add it to your store

In the Status & publishing card, click Publish. Then click Add to store and follow the steps.

The testimonials widget works on your home page, product pages, collection pages and other pages. The full steps are in How to add a Nudgesmart widget to your store.

Common pitfalls

  • The widget says no reviews match. Check that your reviews are marked as genuine and visible, and that your minimum rating and Photos only settings aren't too strict.
  • Collections mode shows nothing. Your reviews may not be linked to products. Link them on the Manage Reviews page.
  • I hid a review but it's still on my store. Publish the widget. See hidden reviews and widgets with unpublished changes.
