How to connect Mailchimp to Nudgesmart

Send emails captured by Nudgesmart popups to your Mailchimp audience, and email shoppers the discount codes they win from your own Mailchimp.

Connect Mailchimp once, and every popup signup joins your audience, tagged "Nudgesmart". Build one automated email in Mailchimp, and shoppers who win discount codes get them by email with your branding.

TL;DR

Open Integrations in the Nudgesmart app and click the Mailchimp card. Paste a Mailchimp API key, pick the audience shoppers should join, and click Save. Click Send a test, then build one flow in Mailchimp using our ready-made email. Finally, switch on Email the codes to shoppers in your campaign's code settings. It takes about 10 minutes, once.

Adding contacts works on any Mailchimp plan. Emailing shoppers their codes uses a Mailchimp flow, which needs Essentials or above.

Step 1 · Connect Mailchimp

In Mailchimp, open your profile → Extras → API keys and click Create A Key. Name it "Nudgesmart" and click Generate Key. Copy it straight away: Mailchimp shows it only once.

In the Nudgesmart app, open Integrations, click Mailchimp, paste the key and click Connect. Your audiences load into a list. Pick the one shoppers should join and click Save.

Pick the audience your Shopify store already syncs into, if you have one. That keeps each shopper as one contact, and Mailchimp bills by contact.

Your API key is stored on our servers. It never reaches your storefront, your theme or your shoppers' browsers.

Step 2 · Send a test

Enter your own email and click Send a test. Nudgesmart adds you to the audience and sends Mailchimp a sample "codes won" event with test codes.

This step matters: the event nudgesmart_codes_won only appears as a flow trigger in Mailchimp after Mailchimp has received it once.

Step 3 · Build the codes email in Mailchimp

  1. In Nudgesmart, choose Codes per shopper (how many codes your campaign gives each shopper) and click Copy email template.
  2. Click Open Mailchimp flows, then Create flow.
  3. Choose the trigger API & Integrations → Event API, and pick nudgesmart_codes_won.
  4. Add an email step, choose Code your own and paste the template.
  5. Replace the colour #D7FF3B with your brand colour, and edit the text and images as you like. The email is yours.
  6. Turn on Contacts can re-enter flow, so a shopper who wins again gets their new codes.
  7. Turn the flow on.

Each code in the email has an Apply & shop button that opens your store with the code already applied at checkout.

If you run campaigns with different numbers of codes, build one flow per number. The campaign editor has a Copy email template for this campaign button that copies the right one for you.

Step 4 · Turn it on in your campaign

Open your spin wheel, scratch card or other code campaign, go to its discount code settings, and switch on Email the codes to shoppers.

Using Mailchimp and Klaviyo together

You can connect both. New contacts go to both tools, and you choose which one sends the discount code emails (Send code emails from this tool in step 1), so a shopper never gets their codes twice.

What gets sent to Mailchimp

  • Email address, added to your chosen audience as subscribed.
  • The "Nudgesmart" tag, so you can build a segment of everyone who signed up through a popup.
  • The codes they won, as a nudgesmart_codes_won event on the contact. This is what starts your codes email.

Common pitfalls

  • The trigger isn't listed in Mailchimp. Send a test from step 2 first. Mailchimp only lists an event after it has received one.
  • No codes email arrives. Check the flow is turned on, your Mailchimp plan is Essentials or above, and Email the codes to shoppers is on in the campaign.
  • A shopper got no email. Mailchimp only emails subscribed contacts. Someone who unsubscribed from your emails before is never re-subscribed by Nudgesmart; they still see their codes on screen.
  • Tell shoppers they are signing up. Shoppers join as subscribed when they submit the popup, so add a short line near the email field, for example "Sign up for our emails and get your codes."

FAQ

Can different campaigns go to different audiences?

Not yet. Every popup on your store sends contacts to one audience. Use the "Nudgesmart" tag to segment them in Mailchimp.

Does it support double opt-in?

No. Shoppers join as subscribed when they submit the popup.

Can I pause it?

Yes. Turn on Pause sending to Mailchimp in step 1. Nothing is sent to Mailchimp while it is on.

Where do I create the API key in Mailchimp?

Mailchimp's guide to generating an API key walks through it. The path is your profile → Extras → API keys → Create A Key.
